Seeing is Believing is our global programme to help tackle preventable and curable blindness. We launched the programme to celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2003, and by the end of 2008, it had reached over five million people in 17 countries, contributing to over two million sight restorations.

In 2008, we launched A New Vision, our latest commitment to Seeing is Believing. We will invest a further $20 million to provide sustainable eye-care services for 20 million people in deprived communities in 20 cities.

Today, there are over 45 million blind people in the world and the vast majority live in the developing world. The real tragedy is that a staggering 80% of this blindness is avoidable or can be cured. A small amount (US$ 30) can restore sight and make a big difference. In fact, restoration of sight is the most cost-effective intervention in health care and has an immediate impact on the life of the individual, their family and the community.

Standard Chartered considers the ‘Seeing is Believing’ program to be truly an opportunity to give back to the communities in which we operate.

A program such as ‘Seeing is Believing’ can enhance:
  • Societal development
  • Corporate reputation
  • Government relations
  • Positive media coverage
  • Market access & business development
  • Employee motivation & development

In partnership with Sight Savers International (SSI) and Vison2020 - the international body for the elimination of avoidable blindness - Standard Chartered has identified 10 flagship projects. The projects are in countries where avoidable blindness has a significant impact on the community:

  • Bangladesh
  • India
  • Kenya
  • Pakistan
  • Thailand
  • China
  • Indonesia
  • Nigeria
  • Sri Lanka
  • Vietnam

The projects involve the funding of cataract operations, training of eye surgeons and the building of training facilities and vision centres.

Why Support ‘Seeing is Believing’?

1. Together with our customers, suppliers and employees we believe that we can make a significant difference to improve the lives of over 1 million sufferers of preventable blindness! The programme has enough scale to provide a sustainable impact that will last beyond the life of this programme.

2. Standard Chartered has a significant presence and history in all the ten recipient countries covered by this programme. We have established media and government relations to enable smoother implementation and ensure that the program receives media coverage and visibility.
